Onterrio Smith Suspended for Year
Suspension NOT Related to Whizzinator

According to published reports, Vikings running back Onterrio Smith has been suspended by the NFL for a period of one-year after receiving his third strike under the NFL's Substance Abuse policy. Smith, who served a four-game suspension during the 2004 season, is believed to have missed a test, which is considered a positive test for repeat offenders. He was immediately dismissed from the team, though he is appealing the decision.

Smith entered the league with a cloud over his head from college infractions including drug use. He slipped to the Vikings in the third round, where he declared himself the S.O.D. (Steal of the Draft). While he has been impressive when on the field, he apparently has not been able to separate himself from his problems of the past. The Vikings front office prepared for just such an event when they traded up in the 4th round of the draft to select running back Ciatrick Fason from Florida. Fason has moved up from 4th on the depth chart to third, behind starter Michael Bennett and reserve Mewelde Moore. It would not be surprising to see Fason in the #2 RB role when the season starts.

As for Smith, his future is uncertain at best. The suspension will cost him his $385,000 salary this year, and likely millions more in future income as teams shy away from him despite his talent on the field. A huge price to pay to smoke a joint!
