Santana Joins Nathan as All-Stars

Twins ace Johan Santana and closer Joe Nathan were both names to the 2005 American League All-Star team over the weekend, giving the Twins two representatives in the game for the first time since 2002, when A.J. Pierzynski and Eddie Guardado represented the Twins.

Nathan goes to the game for the second consecutive season, after being the team’s lone representative in 2004.  His presence in the game was in doubt after a shaky June, but a strong string of outings late in the month helped get him on the team.

Santana makes the team for his first time, curing a major injustice from last season. Santana’s slow start in 2004 kept him off the All-Star team, even though he ended up having one of the most impressive seasons in recent MLB history. History did not repeat itself this year. Santana is 7-4 with a 3.74 ERA, numbers similar to what he had last year at this time, when he was 7-6 with a 3.78 ERA. This year, however, he leads the majors with 140 strikeouts too.

Torii Hunter also has a chance to make the team as the fans’ choice for the team’s 30th man, but with Japanese start Hideki Matsui also on the ballot, overseas ballot casters are sure to sink Hunter’s chances of making the team this year. And it’s just as well. Hunter has played much of the season with various nagging injuries, so a three day break will serve him well.

The All-Star game is next Tuesday, July 12th in Detroit.
