Reverse Play: Camp Will Be Free
New Vikes Owner Wilf Agrees to Pay for Camp Expenses

New Vikings owner Ziggy Wilf hasn't even attended his first Vikings game, but already he is making friends among Vikings fans.  Wilf on Wednesday announced that the city of Mankato's plan to charge admission for training camp practices to help cover their expenses wasn't the way to go.  So, he agreed to open his checkbook and cover the Vikings costs while in Mankato.

The move is a public relations coup for Wilf. Fans were outraged then the plan to charge admission for simple practices was announced. The Vikings would have been the only team in the NFL to do so this season. Washington tried it a couple seasons ago, but quickly dropped the plan. Not only was it a nuisance for fans who make an annual pilgramage to Mankato, but it also could have been a nuisance for the Vikings, who would have been required to admit scouts from other teams to all practices. As it is now, scouts are not allowed in free practices that are open to the public.

MSP Sports weekly has travelled to Mankato to watch the Vikings practice each of the past three seasons. The camp ground just south of town is a fun and affordable place to spend a long weekend with fellow Vikings fans. So we are happy to hear that free public viewings will continue to give Vikings fans young and old a chance to watch practices and dream about the possibilities of the upcoming season. After all, that's what training camp is all about for the fans!
