| Twins Need to Trade Mays Baker Deserves Chance ![]() The August 31st waiver-trade deadline is rapidly approaching. This deadline presents good news and bad news for Twins fans everywhere. The good news: Joe Mays has already cleared waivers and can be traded before that deadline. The bad news: Twins management doesn’t seem eager to pull the trigger on a deal. They really need to rethink their position.
Mays started the year pretty well. Coming off a year and a half of rehab from arm surgery, he shook off the rust early and pitched fairly well during the first month or two of the season. Hitters around the league hadn’t seen him in a while, so he had an upper hand. That quickly changed though. Mays’ fastball is dead. Hitters quickly realized this, and he has been hammered around because of it. After losing to the White Sox Wednesday, Mays is now 6-9 on the season with a 5.16 ERA. Only Dave Gassner has a worse ERA. Yes, Dave Gassner….who is back in the minors where he belongs. Even Terry “White Flag” Mulholland has a better ERA than Mays (5.07). And Mays’s whip: 1.52. You can get away with that if you’re a strikeout pitcher (see Romero’s 1.59 WHIP but respectable 2.93 ERA) but not if you’re a dead-armed control pitcher. The Twins have two solid prospects in Rochester begging for a chance to pitch. Scott Baker looked good in two starts for the Twins this year, going 1-1 with a 2.77 ERA and 1.08 WHIP. And Francisco Lariano is also deserving of a chance to play. He has developed into one of the most sought-after pitching commodities in all of baseball. Yet despite these options, Terry Ryan insists on leaving them in AAA and letting Mays plod out there every 5th day. The Twins are in the Wildcard hunt, and still have an outside shot at the division as well. It is foolish to keep throwing a guy out there who can’t get it done. The time has come to move on. Mays isn’t coming back next season anyway, trade him to another club for whatever you can get. Terry Ryan’s great at identifying quality prospects in the low minors before others realize how good they are. Find someone you like and make the deal. Time is running out not only for the trade deadline, but also for the team’s playoff hopes. Do we really want Mays pitching in the playoffs??? Even out of the bullpen??? Do the right thing Terry….trade Mays and get Baker in the rotation. It only makes sense. |
